Ruby Payne-Scott was an outstanding Australian astronomer and physicist, who had a remarkable contribution to science. She did really well in physics and mathematics when she was in university. When she worked with the CSIR after she graduated, she discovered the Type I and III solar bursts. Her research brought development in the radar used in World War II and the resolution of radio telescopes. At that time however, there was a serious discrimination in the society between different genders, women and men. Women were restricted to many rules on deportment, dress and remuneration. Payne-Scott was a courageous feminist that she fought against this discrimination, as she wanted women and men to be treated in equal ways. When she was 39 years old, her career in scientific research was ended because of the discrimination of different sex. In my opinion, human have same rights no matter what gender they are. We should not judge people by their genders. Everyone has their strengths and we should focus on what they can do to the development the world. People like Payne-Scott had great knowledge in different area should be allowed to contribute to the society, the country and the world. It was really a tragedy that Payne-Scott’s career was ended too early at that time. |
